Retrieval Day Guide: What to Expect
Egg retrieval is a major milestone in the stimulation phase. Here are common steps to expect and questions to confirm with your clinic.
TL;DR
- •Local-First: Sensitive data is stored on your device by default.
- •Clinic-Aware: Educational content points you back to your care team for medical decisions.
- •Actionable: Use these articles to prepare questions while public app access is still waitlist-based.
The Night Before
- Trigger Shot: Follow the trigger-shot timing your clinic gives you, and contact them promptly if the timing or dose is uncertain.
- Fasting: Follow your clinic or anesthesia team's fasting instructions.
The Procedure (15-20 Minutes)
- Prep: You'll change into a gown and get an IV placed.
- Anesthesia or sedation: Your care team will give the medication planned for your procedure and monitor you closely.
- Retrieval: The doctor uses an ultrasound-guided needle to aspirate fluid (and eggs) from each follicle.
- The Lab: The embryologist immediately searches the fluid for eggs and counts them.
Recovery
You'll spend time in recovery while the sedation wears off. You may feel groggy or have cramping; ask your clinic what symptoms are expected and when to call them.

Common Questions
Will I be asleep?
Many clinics use IV sedation, often called twilight sedation. Ask your care team what medication they use, what you may feel, and how they manage pain and safety.
Can I drive home?
Most clinics require a responsible adult to drive or accompany you after anesthesia or sedation. Confirm your clinic's transportation rules before retrieval day.
