Egg Retrieval
procedureDefinition
A minor surgical procedure in which mature eggs are collected from the ovarian follicles using ultrasound-guided needle aspiration.
In IVF Treatment
Performed 36 hours after the trigger shot, egg retrieval takes 15-30 minutes under sedation. The number of eggs retrieved varies based on your ovarian reserve and response to stimulation. Not all retrieved eggs will be mature or fertilize successfully.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is egg retrieval painful?
The procedure itself is performed under sedation, so you should not feel pain during it. Mild cramping and bloating in the days after retrieval are common and normal.
How many eggs are considered a good retrieval?
A typical target is 8-15 mature eggs, though this varies by age, reserve, and protocol. More is not always better. Each clinic will have its own stimulation goals based on your individual profile.
